Boat Charter Etiquette - What to Know Before You Board
Heading out on a boat charter for the first time? You're in for a fantastic experience. A little preparation goes a long way - knowing what to expect means you can relax and enjoy every moment on the water. At Boat Hire Australia, we've hosted thousands of first-time charter guests, and these are our top tips for making the most of your day.
What to Wear and Bring
The golden rule: wear flat, non-marking shoes. Heels and hard-soled shoes can damage the deck and are a slip hazard on a moving vessel. Boat shoes, clean sneakers, or flat sandals are all fine - and many guests go barefoot once aboard. Dress for the weather but bring a light jacket even on warm days, as it's always cooler on the water. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essentials. If swimming is on the agenda, bring your swimsuit and a towel.
BYO Guidelines and Responsible Drinking
If your charter allows BYO, there are a few things to keep in mind. Glass bottles are not permitted on most vessels for safety reasons - transfer your drinks to cans or plastic containers. Eskies and ice are usually provided, but check with your skipper. While it's a party atmosphere, the skipper has the authority to manage alcohol consumption for safety reasons. Everyone on board must follow responsible service of alcohol guidelines - the skipper will ensure this is maintained.
Respecting the Vessel
Charter boats are someone's pride and livelihood, so treat them with care. Listen to the safety briefing at the start - it's quick and important. Ask before moving furniture or equipment. Use the bins provided for rubbish. If something breaks or spills, let the crew know immediately rather than trying to hide it. Most importantly, follow the skipper's instructions at all times. They're responsible for everyone's safety, and their word is final.
Tipping, Timing, and Other Tips
Tipping is not expected or customary in Australia, though it's always appreciated if you feel the crew went above and beyond. Punctuality matters - arrive at the wharf 15 minutes before your scheduled departure. Late arrivals don't extend your booking time, so every minute your guests are late is time lost on the water. If anyone in your group is prone to seasickness, over-the-counter motion sickness tablets taken 30 minutes before boarding work well. Harbour and Broadwater cruises are generally very calm, so seasickness is rare.
